About this quiz
Every state is found by its most populous city rather than its name. The big ones are easy; the test is Huntsville, Bridgeport, Fargo and Burlington. A found state shows its own name on the map.
- Portland is the largest city of both Maine and Oregon, and Charleston of both South Carolina and West Virginia. Either state counts when one of those names is up.
- In 33 states the largest city is not the capital.
- Burlington, Vermont, is the smallest of the fifty, with about 44,000 people.

Note on the data. Each city is the most populous incorporated place in its state by the Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 estimates for 1 July 2024; the April 2020 base gives the same city in every state. Honolulu is the Bureau's Urban Honolulu, and Indianapolis, Louisville and Nashville are their consolidated governments. The 50 states are those on the Census Bureau's state code list, leaving out the District of Columbia and the territories. The map is drawn from the Census Bureau's public domain cartographic boundary files, with Alaska and Hawaii moved and rescaled into the lower left corner.
