About this quiz
The state capitals as dots on the states map. The state lines are drawn, so the test is knowing which state a capital belongs to and where in the state it sits. Dots that crowd together in the north east have a generous target: zoom in to pick them apart.
- Four capitals have City in their name: Carson City, Jefferson City, Oklahoma City and Salt Lake City.
- The capital is often not the biggest city: Sacramento, not Los Angeles, and Albany, not New York City.
- Alaska and Hawaii are drawn in the lower left corner, out of position and not to scale.

Note on the data. The 50 capitals were checked against the National Archives list of state capitals. The 50 states are those on the Census Bureau's state code list, leaving out the District of Columbia and the territories. The map is drawn from the Census Bureau's public domain cartographic boundary files, with Alaska and Hawaii moved and rescaled into the lower left corner. Each dot is the internal point of the capital's place record in the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer place file.
