About this quiz

Derived units are built from the seven SI base units. Twenty two of them are used so often that they have special names and symbols of their own.

  • A newton is one kilogram metre per second squared.
  • The gray and the sievert have the same base units, joules per kilogram, but measure different things.
  • A watt is one joule per second, and a volt is one watt per ampere.
  • The hertz and the becquerel are both one per second: one counts cycles, the other radioactive decays.

Note on the data. Quantities, unit names and symbols follow Table 4 of NIST Special Publication 330, the United States edition of the BIPM's SI Brochure, checked on 3 October 2026. Celsius alone is accepted for the degree Celsius.
