About this quiz
Length spans an enormous range: the ångström is used for the size of atoms, the parsec for the distance between stars. In between sit the metric units and the old customary ones.
- A fathom is 6 feet and a chain is 66 feet.
- A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres, longer than the 1,609.344 metres of a mile.
- A parsec is about 3.26 light years.

Note on the data. Every customary and astronomical unit is converted to metres with the factors of NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8, read on 3 October 2026; the fathom and the chain are those based on the US survey foot listed there. The metric units follow the SI prefixes. Neighbours in the order differ by at least 5 percent.
