About this quiz
The International System of Units is built on seven base units. Since 2019 every one of them has been defined by fixing the value of a constant of nature.
- The kilogram was defined by a metal cylinder kept near Paris until 2019; it is now fixed by the Planck constant.
- The second is defined by the frequency of a transition in the caesium 133 atom.
- The metre is the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
- Every other SI unit, such as the newton or the volt, is derived from these seven.
