  • Each circle is a rule, written out in full beside the diagram. Click the region where the named place belongs: inside one, two or all three circles, or outside them all.
  • Every region holds exactly one of the eight, so a region that is used is out of the running.
  • Keys: 1 to 8 pick the numbered regions, S skips to the next name and comes back later.
  • Pause whenever you like (Esc). The board hides while the clock is stopped.

Click the region of the diagram where the state belongs. The diagram and its three rules appear when you start.

About this quiz

8 diagrams take turns, each made of three of 14 rules. All 50 states are in play. After the round every placement is explained with the figure behind it.

  • Each play deals eight states, one for every region of the diagram, so the regions you have used help with the ones that are left.
  • A state whose figure is within three percent of a rule's threshold is never asked about that rule.
  • Pennsylvania is never asked about a sea coast (its only tidal shore is on the Delaware River), and a state that meets another only at a point or across water is never asked about its neighbours.
  • A wrong click loses that one place and the game moves on; nothing ends early.

Note on the data. Every placement is computed from Ribbia's shared state data: Census Bureau total areas and resident population estimates for 1 July 2025, admission dates from the Congressional Research Service table, sea coasts from NOAA's shoreline mileage table, neighbours from the Census Bureau county adjacency file (pairs that meet only at a point or across water are left out), the Census regions, the National Archives list of capitals and 2020 Census city counts, all read on 3 October 2026. The validator recomputes the region of every state in every diagram and requires all eight regions to be filled.
