- The tiles still shut when you name it
- Type any state on the list to open a tile. A full name counts the moment it is typed.
- Name what the picture shows to win the round. A wrong guess opens one tile, like any other answer.
- Text that is not on the list opens nothing and costs only time.
- Pause whenever you like (Esc). The board hides while the clock is stopped.
Type any state to open a tile. Name the state in the outline to win the round. The picture appears, covered, when you start.
Drawing the map
About this quiz
All 50 states can be the hidden one. The outline is drawn alone, north at the top, scaled to fill the frame, so size is no clue: Rhode Island fills the frame as Texas does.
- Alaska and Hawaii are drawn as they appear on the map of the states, with their islands.
- The tiles open in an order shuffled for each picture, so no answer always opens the same corner.
- A round scores the tiles still shut when you name the picture. A wrong guess opens one tile, the same as any other answer, and text that is not on the list costs nothing.
- A play is 5 pictures. The first play of each day is the same 5 for everyone; play again for a fresh set.

Note on the data. The outlines are the shapes of Ribbia's map of the states, drawn from the Census Bureau boundary files. A test checks that every state has a shape on that map with enough points to be recognised. The 50 states are those on the Census Bureau's state code list, leaving out the District of Columbia and the territories. The map is drawn from the Census Bureau's public domain cartographic boundary files, with Alaska and Hawaii moved and rescaled into the lower left corner.
