About this quiz
Typing a state fills it and every state it shares a stretch of border with. A state that is already showing can still be typed to bring in its own neighbours.
- States that meet only at a point or across water bring nothing: the Four Corners pairs (Arizona and Colorado, New Mexico and Utah), Michigan with Illinois and Minnesota, and New York with Rhode Island.
- Missouri and Tennessee bring 8 states each, more than any other state.
- Alaska and Hawaii border no state, so they have to be named on their own.

- [2]US Census Bureau. Cartographic Boundary Files.
Note on the data. Neighbours were worked out from the Census Bureau's cartographic boundary file: two states are neighbours when their boundaries share a stretch of line. The five pairs that meet only at a point or across water are not neighbours here. Read on 3 October 2026.
