About this quiz
Taxonomy is the science of naming and classifying living things. Each rank nests inside the one above, so a species belongs to a genus, a genus to a family, and so on up to a domain.
- Carl Linnaeus, an eighteenth century Swedish scientist, is often called the father of taxonomy.
- A scientific name has two parts, the genus and the species, such as Solanum lycopersicum for the tomato.
- Domain is the highest rank.
