About this quiz

Kenneth I became king of both Picts and Scots in about 843. The line runs on to James VI, who succeeded to the English Crown in 1603 and so joined the two thrones in one person.

  • Macbeth was a real king, reigning from 1040 to 1057.
  • Donald III reigned twice; Duncan II held the throne for part of 1094 in between.
  • There was no monarch between Margaret's death in 1290 and John Balliol in 1292, or between Balliol's fall in 1296 and Robert I in 1306.
  • James VI was king of Scots for 58 years, from 1567 to 1625.

Note on the data. Monarchs and reign dates follow the Royal Household's pages on each Scottish monarch from Kenneth I to James VI, checked on 3 October 2026, including its spellings (Aed, Giric, Dubh or Duff, Culen or Colin). The Bruces and the Stewarts are the Royal Household's own groupings; earlier monarchs are left unmarked. James VI's reign is shown to 1625, though the list stops at the union of the crowns in 1603.
