About this quiz

The list runs from William I's conquest in 1066 to King Charles III. There was no monarch from 1649 to 1660, when England was a republic, and William III and Mary II reigned jointly from 1689.

  • Henry VI and Edward IV each reigned twice during the Wars of the Roses.
  • Lady Jane Grey reigned for nine days in July 1553.
  • Elizabeth II reigned for 70 years, from 1952 to 2022, the longest of any British monarch.
  • The royal house took the name Windsor in 1917, during the reign of George V.

Sources

  1. [1]The Royal Household. Kings and Queens from 1066.

Note on the data. Reigns follow the Royal Household's list of Kings and Queens from 1066, including Lady Jane Grey. Stephen's reign is listed there with Matilda, who is not counted as a separate monarch here; Stephen is grouped with the Normans. Lancaster and York were branches of the Plantagenets. George V is shown under Windsor, the name he adopted in 1917.
