About this quiz

The Earth has four main layers: a solid inner core, a liquid outer core, a thick mantle and a thin crust. Above the surface, the atmosphere is divided into five layers of its own.

  • The mantle is by far the thickest layer of the Earth's interior, at roughly 2,900 km.
  • The crust under the oceans is only about 5 km thick.
  • The troposphere, the lowest layer of the atmosphere, reaches about 12 km on average.

Note on the data. The four interior layers and their thicknesses follow the USGS publication This Dynamic Earth; the five atmospheric layers and their altitude ranges follow NASA. Both were checked on 3 October 2026.
