About this quiz

The Mohs scale ranks minerals by which can scratch which. A mineral scratches anything softer than itself, so a few everyday objects are enough to test a sample in the field.

  • A fingernail has a hardness of about 2.5, so it scratches talc and gypsum.
  • A copper penny is about 3.5 and a steel nail about 6.5.
  • A knife blade or a glass plate is about 5.5, between apatite and orthoclase.
