About this quiz
Every cloud in the sky belongs to one of ten basic types. They are grouped by the height at which they usually form: three high, three middle and four low.
- Cumulonimbus is the thunderstorm cloud, a dense tower that can look like a mountain.
- Nimbostratus is a dark grey layer blurred by falling rain or snow.
- Cirrus clouds are white, delicate filaments high in the sky.

Note on the data. Names, abbreviations and levels were checked on 3 October 2026 against NOAA's list of the ten basic clouds, the same ten genera as the World Meteorological Organization's International Cloud Atlas. The atlas site itself could not be loaded on that date.
