About this quiz
The ten states divided into the most counties. Size is a poor guide: the biggest states of the West have few and large counties, and the leaders are in the South and Midwest.
- First place has 254 counties; tenth has 95.
- Just outside the ten: Nebraska, with 93.
- Delaware has the fewest, 3. Virginia's count includes its independent cities, which the Census Bureau treats as counties.

Note on the data. Counties and populations are from the Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 county estimates for 1 July 2024, read on 3 October 2026. A county means a county or its equivalent as the Bureau counts them: Louisiana's parishes, Alaska's boroughs and census areas, Connecticut's planning regions and the independent cities. The District of Columbia is left out. The count for each state is the number of county records in the file.
