About this quiz
Fifty states, fifty capital cities. The four boxes are the regions the Census Bureau uses for the whole country: Northeast, Midwest, South and West.
- The South is the largest of the four regions, with 16 states.
- Four capitals have City in their name: Carson City, Jefferson City, Oklahoma City and Salt Lake City.
- Before June 1984 the Census Bureau called the Midwest the North Central Region.
Sources
- [1]National Archives (George W. Bush White House archive). State capitals quiz.
- [2]US Census Bureau. Census Regions and Divisions of the United States.
Note on the data. The 50 capitals were checked on 3 October 2026 against the list of states and capitals in the archived White House page held by the National Archives (which misspells Tallahassee). Regions follow the Census Bureau's map of regions and divisions; the District of Columbia is in the South region there but is not a state, so it is left out.
