  • Pick a cell and type its element. Every cell you solve shows a new clue about other cells.
  • Cells are named like chess squares: the letter is the column, the number is the row.
  • Not sure yet? Add a name to a cell as a note. Notes are never checked and never cost a strike.
  • Keyboard: Alt and an arrow key moves between cells, Enter answers, Shift and Enter adds a note.
  • Pause whenever you like (Esc). The board hides while the clock is stopped.

Work out the element in every cell from the clues. The grid appears when you start.

About this quiz

The periodic table is already a grid of clues: periods, groups, families and atomic numbers. Here they pin down one element per cell, and only one arrangement fits.

  • Any of the 118 elements could be in a cell, and no answer appears twice.
  • The named families (alkali metals, halogens, noble gases and the rest) are the lists approved by IUPAC.
  • Lanthanoids and actinoids count as period 6 and period 7 and have no group number.
  • Aluminum and sulphur spellings are accepted.
