About this quiz

A typical animal cell cut open, with one or more of each organelle. The drawing is Ribbia's own, and it shows only parts that can be told apart by shape and position, so every answer is fair.

  • Cell membrane. The boundary of the cell: a double layer of phospholipids that controls what passes in and out.
  • Cytoplasm. Everything between the membrane and the nucleus: the organelles and the gel they sit in.
  • Nucleus. Houses the cell's DNA and directs the making of ribosomes and proteins.
  • Nucleolus. The dense spot inside the nucleus where ribosome subunits are put together.
  • Rough endoplasmic reticulum. Folded membranes studded with ribosomes, where proteins are made and modified.
  • Smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Tubes with no ribosomes: makes lipids and steroid hormones, detoxifies and stores calcium.
  • Golgi apparatus. A stack of flattened sacs that sorts, tags, packages and sends out lipids and proteins.
  • Mitochondrion. Makes ATP, the cell's energy currency, by cellular respiration. The inner membrane is folded.
  • Lysosome. A small round sac of digestive enzymes, the cell's waste disposal. Drawn with a few specks inside.
  • Vacuole. A plain membrane sac for storage and transport. Small in animal cells.
  • Centrosome. A pair of centrioles at right angles, from which microtubules are organised. Plant cells have none.
  • Ribosomes. The small dots, free in the cytoplasm: they build proteins.
