Drawing the map
About this quiz
A brightfield (compound light) microscope seen from the side, eyepiece at the top left. The drawing is Ribbia's own, and it shows only parts that can be told apart by shape and position, so every answer is fair.
- Ocular lens. The lens you look through. It usually magnifies ten times.
- Rotating nosepiece. The turning mount that holds the objective lenses and swings one into place.
- Objective lenses. The lenses just above the slide, typically from 4 times to 100 times.
- Stage. The platform the slide sits on.
- Mechanical stage knobs. Move the slide across the stage, left and right or back and forth, without raising or lowering it.
- Condenser. The lens under the stage that focuses the light onto the specimen.
- Diaphragm. Opens and closes under the condenser to set how much light reaches the specimen.
- Illuminator. The bright bulb below the stage.
- Coarse focusing knob. The large knob, for big movements with the low power lenses.
- Fine focusing knob. The small knob at the centre of the coarse one, for small movements at high power.
- Rheostat. The dimmer dial on the base that sets how bright the illuminator is.
