About this quiz

The spelling alphabet was adopted in the 1950s so that letters could be understood over noisy radio links by speakers of many languages.

  • Alfa and Juliett are spelled that way on purpose, so speakers of other languages pronounce them correctly.
  • The same alphabet is used by NATO, international aviation and shipping.
  • Every code word is a real word or name chosen to sound unlike any other.
  • Alpha, Juliet and Whisky are accepted here as everyday spellings.

Sources

  1. [1]NATO. The NATO Phonetic Alphabet.
  2. [2]International Telecommunication Union. Recommendation ITU-R M.1677-1: International Morse code.

Note on the data. Code words and their spellings follow NATO's own page, including Alfa, Juliett and X-ray; common everyday spellings are accepted too. The Morse code beside each letter is the one in Ribbia's morse-code quiz, from ITU-R Recommendation M.1677-1.
