About this quiz

The giant planets have dozens of moons each, most of them small. These are the big or famous ones, plus the moons of Earth and Mars and Pluto's Charon.

  • Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are the Galilean moons, found by Galileo in 1610.
  • Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system, bigger than the planet Mercury.
  • Triton was discovered just 17 days after Neptune itself, in October 1846.
  • The moons of Uranus are named after characters from Shakespeare and Alexander Pope.

Note on the data. Each moon and the world it orbits was checked against NASA's moon pages on 3 October 2026. The selection is ours: the Galilean moons, seven large moons of Saturn, the five major moons of Uranus, three moons of Neptune, and the moons of Earth, Mars and Pluto's Charon. Total moon counts are left out because they keep changing.
