About this quiz

California became the 31st state in 1850. Nineteen more followed over the next 109 years, most of them in the West, ending with Alaska and Hawaii in 1959.

  • Four states were admitted within ten days in November 1889: North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Washington.
  • North Dakota and South Dakota share an admission date; North Dakota is counted as the 39th state and South Dakota as the 40th.
  • New Mexico and Arizona both joined in early 1912, and no state followed until 1959.
