About this quiz

A one letter symbol usually went to the element that was named first. Later elements with the same initial took a second letter, which is why carbon is C but calcium is Ca.

  • Two of the letters do not match the English name: K is potassium and W is tungsten.
  • No element has the symbol A, D, E, G, J, L, M, Q, R, T, X or Z.
  • Yttrium, Y, is named after the Swedish village of Ytterby.
