About this quiz
Twelve pairs of cranial nerves emerge from the underside of the brain. They are known both by name and by Roman numeral, numbered in the order in which they appear on that surface.
- The trigeminal nerve (V) is the largest of the twelve.
- The vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII) has two parts, one for hearing and one for balance.
- The hypoglossal nerve (XII) moves almost all the muscles of the tongue.

Note on the data. Each nerve's name, number and role follows the scope note of its Medical Subject Headings descriptor (for example, the olfactory nerve is described as the 1st cranial nerve), read from the National Library of Medicine's MeSH service on 3 October 2026. Names are accepted with or without the word nerve.
