About this quiz

A chemical formula lists the atoms in a molecule or formula unit: H₂O is two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The small numbers count the atoms of the element before them.

  • Glucose and fructose share the formula C₆H₁₂O₆ but arrange the atoms differently.
  • Ozone, O₃, is made of the same atoms as the oxygen we breathe, O₂.
  • Ethanol is written C₂H₅OH to show its OH group; counted up, it is C₂H₆O.

Note on the data. Each name was looked up in PubChem on 3 October 2026 and its molecular formula compared with the one shown here. Formulas are written in the conventional order (NaCl, H₂SO₄), which lists the same atoms as PubChem's Hill notation. Everyday names such as table salt and baking soda are accepted.
