Setting up the board
Rules
- 1.Move all fifty two cards to the four foundations, one per suit, building up from ace to king.
- 2.In the seven columns, build down in alternating colours: a red six on a black seven. You can move a whole run of face up cards together.
- 3.Only a king, or a run headed by a king, can go into an empty column. When a face down card is uncovered it turns over.
- 4.Tap the stock to turn cards onto the waste, one or three at a time. The top waste card is in play. When the stock runs out, the waste turns back over, as often as you like.
- 5.Scoring: 5 for a waste card to a column, 10 for a card to a foundation, 5 for turning a card over, minus 15 for taking a card back off a foundation, and a penalty for turning the waste over (100 in draw one, 20 in draw three).
- 6.When every card is face up and the stock is empty, auto complete finishes the game for you.
How to play
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Tap or click a card | Play it to its best place: the foundation first, then a column |
| Double click | Send a card to its foundation |
| Drag and drop | Move a card or run exactly where you want |
| Tap the stock, or D | Deal from the stock |
| U or Z | Undo the last move |
| A | Auto complete, when every card is face up |
| Tab, Enter, Space | Move between cards; Enter plays one, Space picks it up and puts it down |
- Draw 1: Turn one card at a time from the stock
- Draw 3: Turn three at a time; only the top one plays
Strategy
- Turn over face down cards first. A move that uncovers a hidden card is almost always worth more than one that does not.
- Work on the longest columns early: they hide the most cards.
- Do not empty a column unless you have a king ready to fill it.
- Think before sending low cards home in a hurry. A black five on a foundation cannot hold a red four in the tableau.
- In draw three, the order of the stock changes as you play from it, so playing a waste card can bring new cards into reach.
- Use undo to explore. Every deal here can be won, so a dead end means a different path exists.
Questions
- Can every game really be won?
- Yes. Before a deal reaches you, a solver plays it out and proves it can be won. If it cannot find a win quickly, that deal is skipped for another one.
- What is the difference between draw one and draw three?
- Draw one turns a single card from the stock, so every card is easy to reach. Draw three turns three and only the top one plays, which makes some cards hard to get at.
- How does the daily Solitaire work?
- Everyone gets the same draw one deal each UTC day, so times are directly comparable. Win it to keep your daily streak.
- How do challenge links work?
- After a game, copy the challenge link. It opens the same deal in the same mode, with your time as the one to beat.
