About this quiz

Fifty people have been vice president, and two of them, George Clinton and John C. Calhoun, served under two presidents each. Four presidents never had a vice president at all.

  • John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson and Chester A. Arthur each took over from a president who died and served without a vice president.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt had three vice presidents, the most of any president.
  • Gerald Ford, in 1973, was the first vice president nominated by the president and confirmed by Congress under the 25th Amendment.

Note on the data. Presidencies, vice presidents and dates of service follow the House of Representatives' table of presidents, vice presidents and coinciding sessions of Congress, read on 3 October 2026. A vice president who served under the same president for two terms is one row. Names and accepted short forms are those of Ribbia's us-presidents quiz.
