About this quiz

The main opponent is the candidate the National Archives names for each election: the one with the second most electoral votes.

  • In 1912 the main opponent was a former president, Theodore Roosevelt; the sitting president, William H. Taft, came third with eight electoral votes.
  • William J. Bryan, Thomas E. Dewey and Adlai Stevenson each lost twice in this period.
  • Five of the runners-up were sitting presidents: Hoover in 1932, Ford in 1976, Carter in 1980, Bush in 1992 and Trump in 2020.

Note on the data. Winners, main opponents and electoral votes are read from the National Archives' Electoral College results page for each election from 1900 to 2024, checked on 3 October 2026. Names are spelled as the Archives writes them, with the everyday forms accepted. The votes shown are the main opponent's and then the winner's.
