  • Robert Pinsky, Joy Harjo and Ada Limón each served for three years, longer than any other laureate on the list.
  • Earlier Consultants in Poetry included Robert Frost, from 1958 to 1959.
  • Stanley Kunitz and Howard Nemerov had both served as Consultant in Poetry before the title changed.

Note on the data. Laureates and their years from 1986 to 2022 follow the Library of Congress guide to the Poets Laureate. Ada Limón's term ending in 2025 and Arthur Sze's appointment as the 25th laureate come from the Library's announcement of 15 September 2025. Checked on 3 October 2026; the Library's main Poet Laureate page could not be opened that day, so the current holder should be confirmed. The three Special Bicentennial Consultants of 1999 to 2000 are not counted, in line with the Library's numbering.
