About this quiz

Sir Robert Walpole, in office from 1721 to 1742, is counted as the first prime minister. Many of his successors were peers, so they are listed here under the titles they are best known by.

  • William Ewart Gladstone had four separate spells as prime minister between 1868 and 1894.
  • The two William Pitts, father and son, both held the office; the younger first took it in 1783.
  • George Canning's whole time as prime minister fell within 1827.
  • The Marquess of Salisbury was still in office when the century ended; his last term ran to 1902.

Note on the data. Names, parties and years follow GOV.UK's list of past prime ministers under its 18th and 19th centuries heading, checked on 3 October 2026. Each person appears once, with all their spells in office in the hint. Party labels are GOV.UK's own, including Conservative for Liverpool and Tory and Whig for Pitt the Younger and Derby. Pitt alone fills both Pitts and Grenville alone fills both Grenvilles.
