About this quiz

The four inner planets are small and rocky; the four outer planets are giants. Neptune is about 30 times farther from the Sun than Earth.

  • Earth's average distance from the Sun, about 149.6 million km, defines one astronomical unit.
  • Jupiter is more than five times farther from the Sun than Earth.
  • Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006, leaving eight planets.
  • Distances are averages: every orbit is an ellipse.

Sources

  1. [1]NASA. Planetary Fact Sheet (metric).

Note on the data. Average distances from the Sun (the semi major axis) are taken from NASA's Planetary Fact Sheet, in millions of kilometres.
