About this quiz

The Greek poet Hesiod names the nine Muses near the start of his Theogony, calling them daughters of Zeus born a little way from the topmost peak of snowy Olympus.

  • Hesiod calls Calliope the chiefest of them all, because she attends on princes.
  • In Hesiod's order the Muses are Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polyhymnia, Urania and Calliope.
  • Hesiod says the Muses pour sweet dew on the tongue of a favoured prince, so that gracious words flow from his lips.
