About this quiz

Counts are of different popes on the Holy See's list of pontiffs, up to Leo XIV. A numeral can run higher than the count, because the list does not hold every number.

  • The latest John was John XXIII, but the list holds 21 Johns: it has no John XVI and no John XX.
  • Benedict IX appears three times on the list, for three separate pontificates, and is counted once here.
  • Names level on the count share a place, so naming either opens both.

Sources

  1. [1]The Holy See. Pontiffs.

Note on the data. Papal names, names at birth, dates and the century of each pontificate follow the Holy See's list of pontiffs, read on 3 October 2026. The count for a name is the number of different popes on that list whose papal name is that name with or without a numeral. John Paul is a name of its own.
