About this quiz

Major keys follow the circle of fifths: each step up a fifth adds one sharp, and each step down a fifth adds one flat. Sharps arrive in the order F, C, G, D, A, E, B and flats in the reverse order.

  • C major has no sharps or flats.
  • With sharps, the key is a semitone above the last sharp: three sharps end on G sharp, so the key is A major.
  • With flats, the key is the last flat but one: four flats are B, E, A and D, so the key is A flat major.
  • Seven sharps is C sharp major and seven flats is C flat major.
