About this quiz
Japanese is written with two syllabaries, hiragana and katakana, alongside kanji. Each has 46 basic characters that stand for the same sounds.
- Hiragana is used for native words and grammar; katakana mostly for foreign words, names and emphasis.
- In modified Hepburn romanization, し is shi, ち is chi, つ is tsu and ふ is fu. The older forms si, ti, tu and hu are accepted too.
- The character を (ヲ) is pronounced o in modern Japanese, so both wo and o are accepted.
- ん (ン) is the only basic kana that stands for a consonant on its own.
