About this quiz

Sunlight splits into a spectrum as it passes through raindrops. The classic order of the colours runs from red, the longest wavelength, to violet, the shortest.

  • The initials spell ROYGBIV, a common way to remember the order.
  • Isaac Newton popularised the idea of seven distinct colours.
  • A real rainbow is a continuous range of hues, far more than seven.
  • The colours are named in words only, so the game is the same for players who are colour blind.

Note on the data. The seven colour sequence, the note on Newton and the continuous range of hues follow the Met Office's page on rainbows, checked on 3 October 2026.
