About this quiz
A thinking quiz on a map with no names: decide which countries never reach the sea. You can mark a country as ruled out, and when the round ends every country is listed with the length of its coast.
- Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in the world.
- A click counts for the country under it, so zoom in before picking a small one.

Note on the data. A country is landlocked when the Factbook's Coastline field gives 0 km. The Caspian Sea is counted as a lake, so Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan are landlocked. Land borders, land boundary lengths, coastlines and highest points are those of the CIA World Factbook in its last (2025) edition, read on 3 October 2026 from the archived copies of the agency's own field pages, parsed by script and checked to be symmetric. A border through a dependency (French Guiana, Gibraltar, Greenland, Ceuta and Melilla) or one that depends on a disputed status (Kosovo, Palestine, Western Sahara, the Golan Heights) is on a doubtful list and is never asked. The list is the 193 member states of the United Nations, its two observer states (the Holy See, shown as Vatican City, and Palestine), plus Kosovo and Taiwan, which are not UN members: 197 in all. The member list was checked against the UN page on 3 October 2026; it now gives Nauru as Naoero, and both names are accepted. Continents follow the UN M49 regions, with these choices: Cyprus and Turkey are counted in Europe, Russia is counted in Europe, Kosovo is placed in Europe and Taiwan in Asia. The map is drawn from Natural Earth's public domain 1:50m country boundaries, which show de facto control; Crimea is drawn as part of Ukraine, in line with the UN General Assembly, and Somaliland and Northern Cyprus are drawn as part of Somalia and Cyprus.
