About this quiz
Countries where the largest urban area on the list is not the capital. Only big cities are compared: the list holds urban areas of 750,000 people or more, plus every capital. A lead of less than five percent is too close to call, which leaves out Australia, where Melbourne and Sydney are almost level.
- Figures are for the whole urban area, which is larger than the city proper.
- Countries with more than one capital, such as South Africa and Bolivia, are left out.
- Each row shows the population of the city and of the capital once it is filled.

Note on the data. Urban areas and their populations are those of the CIA World Factbook's field Major urban areas, population, in its last (2025) edition, read on 3 October 2026 from the archived copy of the agency's own page and parsed by script. The figures are for urban agglomerations, which are larger than the city proper, and most are for 2023. Countries whose entry mixes dates, names two capitals or names a seat of government are left out. A country is asked when its largest listed area is not the capital and leads the next listed area by at least five percent. The capital shown is the one Ribbia lists for the country.
