About this quiz
The rules of chess are set out in the Laws of Chess published by FIDE, the International Chess Federation. Article 3 describes how each piece moves.
- The chessboard is an 8 by 8 grid of 64 squares, alternately light and dark.
- The columns of the board are called files and the rows are called ranks.
- A draw is automatic, with no claim needed, after 75 moves by each side without a pawn move or a capture.
- Castling counts as a single move of the king.
