About this quiz
The 20 standard amino acids are the building blocks that cells join into proteins. Each has an agreed three letter symbol and a one letter symbol used for writing long sequences.
- Eleven codes are the first letter of the name, such as G for glycine and L for leucine.
- Where several names share a first letter, the others take a different one: K is lysine, W is tryptophan and Q is glutamine.
- F stands for phenylalanine and Y for tyrosine.
- B, J, O, U, X and Z are not used for any of the 20 standard amino acids.
