About this quiz

The road to independence ran from a decade of quarrels over taxes, through eight years of war, to a peace treaty signed in Paris in 1783.

  • The Stamp Act of 1765 was the first direct tax on the American colonists.
  • The surrender of about 6,000 British regulars at Saratoga helped bring France into the war.
  • At Bunker Hill more than 1,000 of the 2,200 British troops in action were killed or wounded.
  • The fighting moved south from 1779, ending with the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781.

Note on the data. Events and dates follow the National Park Service's Timeline of the Revolution, checked on 3 October 2026. Where the timeline gives only a month, the event is placed by that month; no two events here fall in the same month without an exact day. The Declaration is shown as July 1776, as the timeline gives it.
